Don’t Talk About the S&P 500 in My Backswing

by Jacob Brown
I was in a meeting with a prospective client the other day, and our discussion quickly centered on her time. She was feeling stressed and overwhelmed and was interviewing advisors about managing her portfolio for her. She was telling me that she’s been managing her investments for a couple of years now and has been doing pretty well but no longer has the time to keep up with market trends, research, or making trades.
So, I asked her, “How much time per week would you estimate that you spend on your portfolio?” She said, “Seven hours.” That’s seven hours working, let alone the amount of time she spends thinking about it…
If I’m with my kids, I want to be with my kids. If I’m on a morning run, I want to enjoy some exercise. If I’m on the 12th hole and about to tee off, the last thing I want to be thinking about is if right now is the best time to sell some of my stock. I want to keep my ball in play and enjoy being outside.
Now, does everyone that manages their own investments spend hours per week doing research and making sure they are making the right moves day to day? No. It greatly depends on what your investments are and how actively they need to be managed. However, the concept still carries; how much of your time and brain power are you willing to give up when you could pay an advisor that you trust to do it for you?
