Q&A
What do you value most about working with this team?
I love how tight knit we are and how efficiently we can attack a challenge or a new idea. Running this efficiently ultimately benefits our clients.
What are you most passionate about in your work?
I am most passionate about having a direct financial impact on the families we serve and helping them and their next generations thrive.
What previous experience or roles have prepared you for this position?
As account manager in my previous roles, I loved working one on one with clients and educating them about the product I represented and how it could help them move closer to their goals. This directly translates to finance in that, I have learned how to help make very technical concepts digestible to those that may not have a background in what we are discussing.

Q&A
If you hadn’t become a Financial Advisor, what career would you have chosen instead?
I think becoming a lawyer would be at the top of my list. Many of the traits I’ve developed as a financial planner would be useful in the legal profession as well, such as analytical thinking, recognizing and managing emotions, and being able to see the big picture in my client’s situations. But questions regarding the law are something I regularly read books about and listen to podcasts on so I could see myself working in it.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced and how did you overcome it?
Starting a new business is very hard, and I’ve done it twice. When my family was young, we together traveled the length and breadth of the lower 48 states, meeting with people to raise support for our living expenses in Ivory Coast, West Africa during the eight years we were there. Later when I began a financial planning practice in Tucson, I knocked on thousands of doors gaining clients by meeting with them in their homes. Both ‘beginnings’ required determination and persistence, and although I was often discouraged, I didn’t give up. Much success in life comes from simply not quitting when you feel hopeless, and I’ve had my share of that feeling.
What are some of your favorite books?
In non-fiction reading I’ve often got my nose buried in books about legal matters or history. I recently read Reforming Criminal Justice by Martin Martins and Midnight of the Summer Moon by SC Gwynne. Reading about things that helped shape us gives me understanding as to why we think and act the way we do. The hope is we’ll avoid making the same dumb mistakes again, but I’m not holding my breath on this. For fiction reading, I enjoy novels about war but also about the American west. Favorites include books by Cormac McCarthy like Blood Meridian and All the Pretty Horses. One of my all-time favorite novels is Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. I am always reading something, and often more than one thing at a time.

Q&A
What are some of your favorite books, movies, or music?
It’s a good thing the question is what my favorites books (plural) are right now. There is NO way I could just pick one. My favorite book series to recommend is The Innkeeper Chronicles by Ilona Andrews, which is a pen name for a husband and wife writing team. They are fantastic at creating robust worlds and three dimensional major and minor characters. And they make me laugh. A lot.
When I’m not reading science fiction or fantasy, I’ve been loving Emily Henry’s romcoms. Book Lover is my current favorite, but I just finished Great Big Beautiful Life and adored it.
My all-time favorite movies are Arrival (with Amy Adams & Jeremy Renner) and About Time (with Rachel McAdams & Domhnall Gleeson). A friendly discussion of the former led to dating and then marrying my husband. The latter is a movie we watched via Zoom, while we were dating during the Pandemic, and now we watch it at least once a year together because it was such a core memory for us at the time.
Favorite Musicians/Band: Florence + The Machine, Two Steps from Hell, JJ Heller, Imagine Dragons, … and yes Taylor Swift.
If I could play a song on repeat forever and not go insane . . .
The theme song from Bluey. The moment those chords start to play, my toddler magically transforms into a happy, laughing little girl, no matter where we are (and has conveniently forgotten she was upset mommy couldn’t transform vegetables into a grilled cheese sandwich)
My favorite word in the English language is . . .
Obsequious. It’s a vocabulary word from my 9th grade Honors English class and basically describes the personality of a first born and Type A personality. Which is me. And it’s just very fun to say out loud.
On your bucket list . . .
Someday I’ll write a novel. I’ve started a bunch; I just need to finish one.
What do you enjoy most about working at SIA?
I love being paid to dive deep into data and numbers, geeking-out over spreadsheets and graphs. I also enjoy being part of a company that strives to help people be their healthiest financial selves, where we get the privilege to walk through every small and big life event with them. It’s also fun to collaborate with a great team to accomplish all the above.

Q&A
What led you to work in this field?
I got tired of seeing capable people get written off by the financial world. There’s this assumption that being good with your hands translates to being bad with your money, which just isn’t true. I wanted to help shift that narrative in my community.
What do you enjoy most about living and working in Arizona?
The desert grew on me more than I ever expected. The people are friendly, and the scenery is breathtaking. Hiking with my dog in the Sonoran landscape never gets old. When the heat is unbearable, it’s easy enough to gain some elevation and find cooler weather. Having been a skier since I was young, Arizona is the only place where I’ve been able to hit the slopes in a t-shirt.
What are your interests and hobbies outside of work?
I enjoy cooking, reading, woodworking, racquet sports, and traveling when I can. Put simply, I like to stay busy with my hands, learn new things, and see new places.

Q&A
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Willcox, Arizona, where I developed a strong work ethic and appreciation for agriculture while working at Apple Annie’s, the infamous you-pick farm.
What are some of your favorite books, movies, or music?
I’m an avid reader with a particular love for Colleen Hoover’s novels—her storytelling never disappoints. Sarah J. Maas is another favorite; I’ve enjoyed every one of her books. Currently, I’m hooked on the Fourth Wing series by Rebecca Yarros, which tops my list at the moment.
When it comes to movies, She’s The Man remains my all-time favorite. I gravitate toward comedies and am always open to recommendations—if you know a good one, I’d love to hear it!
My music taste is quite eclectic. I enjoy a wide range of genres, though I typically steer clear of jazz, blues, and techno. Some of the artists I frequently listen to include Morgan Wallen, Zach Bryan, Bailey Zimmerman, Eminem, Selena Gomez, and Kesha.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, and money was not a factor, where would you go?
If given the chance to travel anywhere, I dream of visiting Italy, Ireland, Scotland, Bali, and Greece.
The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is . . .
Don’t take advice from someone whose position you wouldn’t want to be in.
Cats or dogs?
I have always been a dog girl through and through, but after moving into a housing development with a small yard, it wasn’t fair nor realistic for my family to have a dog so, I currently own and love 3 cats. Affectionately known as Limp Bizkit “Bizkit”, Blink 182 “Blink”, and Savage Garden “Savage”.

Alix Kusler, CWS®
Partner
Alix serves as partner and portfolio manager at Southwest Investment Advisors. She builds long-term relationships with clients and develops financial plans and strategies that allow clients to “outsource the worry” to the SIA team so that they can live the lives they want to live, knowing that their money is in good hands. As portfolio manager, she directs the portfolio team as they research, implement, and monitor investment portfolios specifically designed to help clients pursue their goals in an ever-changing world.
Alix joined SIA in 2009 after serving as a college ministries intern at a Presbyterian church in Fort Collins, Colorado. In her time at SIA, she has worn just about every hat in the firm from operations manager to financial advisor to portfolio manager and now partner.
Alix graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Pepperdine University, where she seized the opportunity to study abroad in Florence, Italy. Yes, she still speaks (limited) conversational Italian, and yes, she still has an undying love of bold red wine, al dente pasta, and dark chocolate.
Alix holds FINRA Series 7 and 66 securities registrations, which are held through LPL Financial.
When she’s not in the office, Alix enjoys running with her handsome husband, singing at church, laughing with friends, and traversing National Parks with her two very active young boys. She is in a constant state of rearranging furniture, which she swears is a real hobby, and has recently renewed her long-lost love of reading, preferring historical fiction with an element of magic or mystery.

Q&A
What has been surprising to you about the field of finance?
When I was first hired at SIA, I didn’t know what to think of the industry – I thought finance was all about Wall Street “bros,” smarmy men in ties and goatees making the rich get richer. What I learned is that we help normal and wonderful people plan for their futures – no goatee required! Yes, what we do is research and numbers-based, but it’s so much more about the relationships we forge with our clients and how we help their money provide for them. We get to be an intimate part of people’s lives and families, and I don’t take that for granted.
What is your history with investing?
My college money was too aggressively invested and seemingly disappeared overnight after the dot-com bubble burst in the early 2000s. At that time, my parents had to come out of retirement to go back to work, I had to apply for as many grants and scholarships as possible while working my way through college, and after all that, I graduated with a business degree in 2008 during the worst stock market downturn since the Depression, what we now know as the Great Financial Crisis – not a good time to be entering the job market!
This all gave me a healthy appreciation for the way not to do things. The way we invest at SIA may not be sexy, but it’s consistent. We’re not picking stocks or timing markets or following trends – I’ve seen how quickly that can go south. We are carefully investing our clients’ hard-earned retirement money (college money, legacy money), and we take that seriously.
What are some of your notable achievements or projects?
Putting cute animal pictures in the bathrooms. Kidding, but only kind of. There’s a lot to be said for atmosphere – think how you feel when you go into a stark doctor’s office and immediately get nervous. Talking about money can make people uncomfortable, and we want to do what we can to dispel that. When clients walk in our door, Annette offers them a smile and a beverage. She seats them in a conference room that has comfy chairs and photos of our team members’ families – an inviting atmosphere. So, when the designers told me we couldn’t put cute animal pictures in a professional office setting, we decided to do it anyway. It makes people smile. (Mike and Chad, if you ever read this, I am sending you all the hugs – and also an “I told you so” wink.)
Favorite musicians:
- John Mayer I don’t know why I love him so much; I always have and just do. His music has been a soundtrack to my life and makes me feel calm.
- Ryanhood Local folk rock storyteller duo with a phenomenal stage presence, look them up!
- Andy Grammer He’s our family favorite – such a positive voice! Our youngest son may or may not have fallen asleep at two of his concerts.
My favorite word in the English language is:
“Whimsical.” You can’t say it without smiling. Okay, at least I can’t. Seriously, just try it.
